tic tac toe google. I am a big fan of playing tic tac toe with my kids and I wanted to see if I could build the game using Apps Script. It was really fun to write this script, and I’m excited to share my work with you. I have also built a version that can be used on mobile (Android and iOS). Check out the source code on Github for details on how to build the game.

7 steps to build a Tic Tac Toe game in Google Sheets using Apps Script:

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to build a Tic Tac Toe game using Google Apps Script. This is a very basic tutorial, but you should be able to understand how to set up a simple game. The most important part of this tutorial is to learn how to use Apps Script. Apps Script is a JavaScript library that allows you to write scripts in JavaScript for Google Apps. You can think of Apps Script as an API (Application Programming Interface) for Google Apps.

The game has a function to check if the user’s input is valid. It then processes the user’s selection and notifies the other player that it is now their turn. If the game is a draw, the game will ask the players to try again. This allows the game to start over.

Step 1 — Create a Google Sheets spreadsheet and the Tic Tac Toe board:

Make a new Google Sheets spreadsheet. Add a Board sheet to it. This sheet will include the Tic Tac toe board.

Tic Tac Toe boards are made up of 9 squares (three rows X three columns), and look like this:

  • These steps will allow you to create it in your spreadsheet:
  • Make a board.
  • Select all cells in the spreadsheet to resize them. Drag the row separators around until each cell looks square.
  • Add a black border to every cell in the B2.4 range.
  • View menu: Turn off gridlines
  • This video shows you how to do the steps above:
  • Your browser doesn’t support HTML5 video. This is the link to the video.
  • Next, we need to create the Tic Tac Tee board.
  • Fill the board with light gray.
  • Then enter some test values. Next, select all cells in the grid and center align them vertically and horizontally. You can also adjust the font size to 16.
  • The screencast below shows you how to do the above steps.
  • Your browser doesn’t support HTML5 video. This is the link to the video.
  • Create a named range to be used on the Tic Tac Toe Board. Right-click on the 9 cells and choose Define named range.
  • The range Board! 2.4 should be the name, Board. This named range should now be listed in the sidebar menu under the Named Ranges.

Now you can create the Tic Tac toe board. Also, download the Google Play Store Version of this Application

Step 2 — Create a box to display messages to the players:

We’ll use a special box to keep track of our messages during the game. It will be a simple wooden box with a lid and a message label. We’ll use it as a game board for our game. You can create a custom notification by adding a row of text to the top of your worksheet. Then, you can use conditional formatting to determine which rows should display the message. You should be able to delete them from the spreadsheet.

Step 3 – Set up an on-selection change simple trigger to detect selections and display the user’s selection in the message box:

This code sets up an on-selection change event to detect the user’s selection and display the selected color in the message box. It also adds a set of properties that will be used by the code below. function onOpen() { var UI = SpreadsheetApp.getUi(); // Or DocumentApp or FormApp. UI.create menu(‘Custom Menu’) .

You can use this to copy, paste, and even delete rows and columns from a spreadsheet. The first example shows how you can select the entire worksheet by pressing CTRL+A, then select the range of cells you want to copy. You can then paste the selected cells into a new document.

Step 4 – Create a function to check if the user’s selection is valid:

Now that your script is automatically detecting selections in your spreadsheet, the next step is to check if the user’s selection is valid. If the user’s selection is not valid, you want to display an error message and then stop the script.

In this tutorial, we will add functions that validate the selection and display a message if the selection is invalid.

Step 5 – If the user’s selection is valid, process their play and notify the other player that it is now their turn:

Now that we have all the pieces in place, let’s put them together. First, let’s add a new function called play(). This function will take the user’s input and verify that it is valid. Then it will check whose turn it is and if it is the first player, it will put that player’s character in the cell that the user has selected. Finally, it will display a message to the other player that it is now their turn.

First, we’ll set up a function that returns whether the selected square is valid for playing a Tic Tac Toe game.

The game will never stop since we haven’t implemented checking for the two ways the game can end: A player wins the game. The game comes to a draw and no player wins. If the game ends in a draw, it will be a tie and no one wins.

You will start to notice some of the changes to your site.

Step 6:

We will use a function called hasPlayerWonGame() to determine if the current play resulted in the player winning. This function checks for the presence of identical characters in any row, column, or diagonal. This function also checks that the character isn’t blank. Without this check, it will return true even if the board is empty. To check if the current player has won, we need to modify play() to use the selected square.

We will verify that all nine squares are filled with a character and that no winner has been declared to determine if the game has ended in a draw. This check will be implemented in the same way as for the whoseTurnIsIt() function. If the number of squares taken is 9, it will be a count. If no player wins, the game is considered a draw.

We will also create a separate function, numSquaresTaken(), which returns the number of non-blank squares, as both functions count the squares that have been taken. We will then modify the function whoseTurnIsIt() to use this function. A function called areAllSquaresTaken() will also be created to verify that all nine squares have been taken.

The idea for enhancement:Tic Tac Toe Google

This is an interesting way to increase the chances of detecting a draw early in the game. If you find out that no player can win, you can immediately call a draw.

  • We now have a working Tic Tac Toe in Google Sheets!
  • Here’s an example of the game where Player 2 wins:
  • Your browser doesn’t support HTML5 video. This is the link to the video.
  • Here’s an example of a game that ends in a draw

Step 7 – Create the ability to reset the game:

Click on the button in Google Sheets. Once you have the button, create a script that will allow us to click the button and reset the game.

I use JavaScript to clear the board. I also tell player 1 that it is their turn to play. Active cell outside the board so that the first click within the board will run the on selection change() trigger. This is to ensure that the first click within the board will run the on-selection change() trigger.

All you have left to do is add a few more functions to the game. To do that, click on the three dots menu on the top right corner of the sheet and select “functions” from the menu.

In this tutorial, I showed you how to build a Tic Tac Toe game in Google Sheets using Apps Script. Now it is finally time to have fun playing Tic Tac Toe. Thank you for reading my article. I hope you have learned something new from it. If you have any questions, please let me know. I am always happy to help.
